About this genre
Born in United Kingdom, 1990s · Electronic & Dance
Forged in early-1990s UK urban communities, it fuses breakneck breakbeat rhythms, heavyweight sub-bass, and rapid-fire MC vocals drawn from Jamaican soundsystem culture, creating a dense, kinetic sound that laid the groundwork for drum and bass.
